09:23 am - Micro Economies I am envisioning a system that facilitates a local community exchange. People could visit a website and set up a local group of friends that they want to exchange services with. An example might be "Sellwood Babysitting", or "Portland Car Maintenance". The group can be invite only (as in the babysitting example) or open to anyone. Each group has a listing of "services wanted" and "services offered".
The system acts like Craigslist except it keeps track of your commitments. Here is how the commitment tracking would work in the babysitting example:
1) Alex sets up a babysitting group and invites all his parent friends. They invite some of their friends and eventually the group has 30 people. Each member of the group has 0 commitment points.
2) Alex needs babysitting on Friday night and is offering 40 points. Sharie takes him up on his offer. After the commitment is fulfilled Alex has -40 points (a debt) and Sharie has a balance which she can spend to get babysitting on another night.
The benefits over Craigslist include:
* "money" stays within the group it serves. You can not buy car maintenance with babysitting points. * "money" is issued by the people who use it. * "money" exist in sufficient supply to meet the needs of that community.

06:34 am - The Idea Machine So I started up a new project this weekend.
Go see it
The idea is to experiment with 'social brainstorming'. Typically when we try to come up with new ideas we'll write some lists and maybe talk to a few friends. This project tries to open up that creative process to the entire Internet. Anyone can add a question to brainstorm about, and anyone can submit an idea to an open brainstorm. By 'giving stars' to your favorite ideas an ordered list of the best ideas will hopefully begin to emerge.

Better see this in the theater. I don't think Kristin's 9 inch TV is really going to do it justice.

11:33 am - Buying a used car on Craigslist So now I've actually bought and sold a car on Craigslist. There are so many shady people on the car section of Craigslist it makes you start to think the world is inherently evil.
Here are my tips on buying a car on Craigslist:
1) Choose who you do business with. If you wouldn't take the car owner out for a beer you should walk away from the transaction. There are way too many cars for sale to deal with someone you don't trust. Ideally this person is over 30, has a family, and lives in a house. People take car of their car the same way they take care of their house.
2) Run a carfax.com report on the car. It's the best $20 you can spend.
3) Check to make sure the VIN on the title matches the VIN on the car, there are a shit ton of stolen cars on craigslist.
4) Take the car to a mechanic. Everyone is lying to you so you should get the opinion of a disinterested 3rd party.
5) If everything checks out make a lowball offer. The car owner is probably sick of going for test drives with Meth addicts and the fact that you can speak coherently is probably worth at least $500 to him.
6) Do not leave unless you have the car and the title signed over to you. If someone says "I need your money to pay off the bank before I can send you the title" it's a scam.

11:05 pm - Coupons clipped by robots! I extended the mediacrash idea onto another domain I own that I haven't been doing anything with. Wazima.com now collects coupons and the best sales that are occurring around the web. Like mediacrash it personalizes the information so it should only show you the sales and deals that you are interested in. Current Music: Everything but the Girl - Tempermental
